In the late 1800's sailors in Mattapoisett got together to hold one-design racing in Mattapoisett Harbor and in 1901 the Mattapoisett Yacht Club was founded. Since that time the club has continued to offer local sailors the opportunity to sail and race in Mattapoisett. For many years our Wednesday night handicap racing series has been the mainstay of the club. These races provide opportunities for all levels of experience, from beginners to seasoned racers. Around 2010 the club added Ensign Class one-design racing on Tuesday nights. Our Ensign “Fleet 76” has been one of the fastest growing fleets in the country. As part of our commitment to advancing the sport the Tuesday series will also include a start for the 420 class. 420’s are sailed by our local Mattapoisett Community Sailing Association as well as the Old Rochester High School Sailing Team. MYC has long been a contributor to inter-club racing events. We help organize the Buzzards Bay Trophy, a series of races sponsored by local yacht clubs. Both our Spring and Fall 'Round the Bay' races are a part of the series that will determine the winner of the Buzzards Bay Trophy. As exciting as racing is, all of our members enjoy the sheer pleasure of day sailing and cruising on Buzzards Bay and its surrounding waters. We are truly blessed to have ideal sailing conditions and a seemingly limitless number of harbors and sailing destinations. MYC now offers a variety of cruising events for both sail and power boats. We can’t leave out the wonderful camaraderie that is available at MYC. Getting together with fellow members is one of the most enjoyable aspects of membership. Guests are welcome at all social events. Contact us to come join in on the fun! Rich Gleason Commodore [email protected] |
